The electronic Health Card – optimal treatment throughout Europe

There are plans to make the voluntary applications of the electronic Health Card, such as emergency data or medication documentation, accessible throughout Europe. To make patient health data available to access all over Europe in the event of health treatment, the electronic Health Card must be equipped with the feature known as interoperable infrastructures. Legal and contractual basic principles, organisational agreements, technical connections and general agreements relating to the structure and display of data. The "action plan for the use of the electronic Health Card throughout Europe" is an important step towards linking and integrating the previously inconsistent national health systems in Europe. With the introduction of the electronic Health Card, Germany is creating an important platform for the further expansion of European cooperation.
The card already provides a glimpse into the future, as the European Health Insurance Card, or EHIC in short, can be included as a visual ID on the rear side of the electronic Health Card from the very start. The EHIC has features which are uniform throughout Europe, such as the EU emblem with the abbreviation of the issuing country and a signature field for the signature of the card holder. The card contains the data required in accordance with the European Union Law for the granting of medical services and reimbursement of costs in Europe. This includes the surname and first name, date of birth of the card holder, the first ten digits of the health insurance number, a code number for the health insurance company and the period of validity of the card.
